About This License

Journeyman Plumber” means a person licensed under this chapter as a journeyman plumber having the qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to engage in the plumbing trade.

Residential Journeyman Plumber” means a person licensed under this chapter as a residential journeyman plumber having the qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to engage in the plumbing trade as limited to the plumbing of residential buildings.

Plumbing trade” means the performance of any mechanical work pertaining to the installation, alteration, change, repair, removal, maintenance, or use in building or within three feet beyond the outside walls of buildings of pipes, fixtures and fittings for delivery of the water supply, discharge of liquid and water carried waste or the building drainage system within the walls of the building. It includes that work pertaining to the water supply, distribution pipes, fixtures, and fixture traps, the soil, waste and vent pipes, and the building drain and roof drains together with their devices, appurtenances, and connections where installed within the outside walls of the building.

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

  • To become a plumbing contractor, candidates must pass the Journeyman exam and the business and law exam.
  • Journeyman exam: you need four years of full-time apprentice training or eight years of full-time Division-approved work experience.
  • Must gain approval to take the exam by submitting an application to the State Licensing Board

Applying For Your License

$110 non-refundable to file an application for a license. The exam will cost you $110. Your first license is free and it’s good for two years, expiring November 30th every other year.

Exam Details

Journeyman Plumber Theory Examination

  • Partially open book. 100 questions, with a time limit of four hours.
  • Minimum score of 70%
  • Exam given by PSI: 800-733-9267
  • Topics include: Basic Valves, Drain, Waste, Vent DWV, Fire Sprinkler, Fuel Gas, Hydronics, Indirect & Special Waste, Pipe and Fittings, Plumbing Drawing, Plumbing Fixtures, Plumbing Math, Plumbing Safety, Structural Penetration, Insulation, Water Heaters and Water Supply.

Journeyman Residential Plumber Theory Examination

  • Partially open book. 90 questions, with a time limit of four hours.
  • Minimum score of 70%
  • Exam given by PSI: 800-733-9267

Journeyman Plumber Practical Examination

  • Two projects with 2.5 hours to complete. A 70% is required to be considered passing.
  • The Journeyman Plumber practical examination consists of two parts. (Please note, one of the two assigned projects will include a rolling offset.)
  • Plastic Assembly being worth 37 points overall points.
  • Copper Assembly being worth 37 points overall points.

The exam center will provide Solder/flux, Primer/solvent cement (for the plastic pipe project) and Scratch paper. Candidates are responsible for bringing the following items for use during their Practical Exam:

  • A non-programmable calculator (silent, battery operated, no alphabetical keyboard, no paper tape)
  • Torch capable of soldering 1” copper assembly project.
  • 1 Tape measure
  • 1 Tubing cutter (copper)
  • 1 Tubing cutter (PVC schedule 40)
  • 1 Reamer
  • 1 Level with 45 degree reading
  • 1 Framing or carpenters square
  • Tools to perform copper and plastic pipe assemblies
  • Safety glasses for soldering*

*If you do not bring safety glasses to the practical exam, you will NOT be allowed to complete the soldering project and will receive a failing grade on that part.
