About This License

A Master Plumbing License covers unlimited plumbing work including sanitary drainage, water supply, storm drainage, and natural gas piping.

A Journeyman Plumbing license covers unlimited plumbing work including sanitary drainage, water supply, storm drainage, and natural gas piping while under the supervision of a Master Plumber.

Requirements to Obtaining your License

  • All plumbing work in North Dakota requires a license.

    If the cost of the project exceeds $2,000, a contractors' license will also be required.

    Master Plumber

    • Applicants for a master license must show 2 years of experience as a journeyman.

    Journeyman Plumber

    • Applicants for a journeyman license must document 7,600 hours or 4 years as an apprentice.

Exam Review, Training, Education

Books and References for the Exam

  • The exam fee is $35 for the master license and $25 for the journeyman license.
  • After you apply, you be will set up for your exam.
  • A 70% is required to pass the journeyman exam whereas an 80% is required to pass the master exam.

Continuing Education

6 hours of continuing education are required every year and 3 of the hours must be based on the National Electrical Code.

  • The master license fee is $165 and the journeyman fee is $75.
