About This License

A licensed plumber in Montana can perform all aspects of plumbing, utility connections, irrigation systems, as well as gas piping to water heaters, laundry equipment, kitchen equipment, gas grills, and swimming pool heaters.

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

Journeyman applicants must provide a specific record of 5 years’ experience, legally obtained, in the field of plumbing, or completion of an apprenticeship program meeting the standards set by the Department of Labor and Industry, or the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship.

Master applicants must provide evidence of 4 years’ experience as a licensed journeyman plumber in the field of plumbing, with 3 years’ experience working with a licensed master plumber or in a supervisory capacity in the field of plumbing, which may run concurrently with the 4 years’ experience as a licensed journeyman plumber.

Master Plumber: The application fee is $100 and the license fee is $280.

Journeymen Plumber: The application fee is $100 and the license fee is $170.

Exam Details

Master Exam

  • Open Book
  • Time limit of 2 1/2 hours
  • Exam requires a 70% to pass.

Journeyman Exam

  • 2 Portions: Written and Practical
  • Both are Closed Book
  • Written Time limit is 2 1/2 hours
  • Practical Time limit is 4 hours
  • Exam requires a 70% to pass.

Reciprocity Agreement

Has agreements with OR, ID, ND, and SD for journeyman licensure only. The reciprocity fee, in addition to the application fee, is $300.
