Texas contractor’s licenses are obtained through one of the state’s licensing authorities or a local licensing authority, depending on what type of license you are seeking. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) issues licenses to HVAC, electrical, and water well driller contractors. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) issues and regulates licenses for plumbing contractors in the state. Local licensing authorities sometimes require general contractors, builders, home improvement contractors, and others to get licensed prior to performing contracting work. These contractors do not need to get licensed on the state level.
