South Dakota Electrical License (Contractor/Journeyman)

License Requirements

Requirements to Obtaining your License

  • Contractor Electrician

    • Must have one year’s experience working as a licensed journeyman electrician under the supervision of a contracting master electrician.
    • Must have public liability insurance for at least $300,000 and you need to post a $10,000 bond

    Journeyman Electrician

    • Shall have four years experience (8000 hours total, maximum 2000 hours per year) registered as an apprentice electrician under the supervision of a contracting master licensed electrician in an area where electrical construction work is done in the jurisdiction regulating similar rules of the state of North Dakota.
    • The person must have the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations of the National Electrical Code.

    Class B Electrician

    • Must have public liability insurance for at least $300,000 and you need to post a $10,000 bond
    • Shall have eighteen months’ experience in farmstead or residential wiring under the supervision of a master or class B electrician.
    • Commercial wiring experience will not be credited for experience towards a class B license.
    • Six months’ credit will be granted for a graduate of a two-year electrical school approved by the state electrical board.

Work Under this License

Work that can be Done Under this License

  • Contractor electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to plan, lay out, and supervise the installation and repair of electrical wiring apparatus, and equipment for electric light, heat, and power in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work.
  • Journeyman electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work.
  • Class B electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work, and shall have eighteen months' experience in farmstead or residential wiring, and shall have passed an examination before the state electrical board based upon the national electrical code as it applies to farmstead or residential wiring.

  • The contractor license fee is $100, the Journeyman fee is $40
  • All licenses expire June 30th of the even numbered years.
  • The application process takes approximately 30 days.

Reciprocity

Reciprocity Agreements

  • The electrical contractor license is reciprocal with Minnesota and South Dakota.
  • The journeyman license is reciprocal with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming


Continuing Education

Continuing Education

Continuing education is required of each electrician in order to renew their license each biennium. You will need to have 16 hours, 8 code and 8 non-code or they all may be code.

Exam Details

  • $40 test fee
  • Minimum score of 70%
  • Topics include: general electrical knowledge; service, feeders, and branch circuits; grounding and bonding; conductors and cables; raceways and boxes; special occupancies and equipment; electrical power; motors; low voltage; lighting; illuminated signs; fire detection and alarm systems; safety information; overcurrent protection; and high voltage.
