    North Dakota Electrical License (Master, Journeyman)

    Master Electrician Requirements: Must have one years experience working as a licensed journeyman electrician under the supervision of a contracting master electrician. Journeyman Electrician Requirements: Must have four years experience (8000 hours total, maximum 2000 hours per year) registered as an apprentice electrician (of which up to eighteen months may apply under the qualifications of a class B electrician) under the supervision of a contracting master licensed electrician in an area where electrical construction work is done in the jurisdiction regulating similar rules of the state of North Dakota. Requirements To Complete

About This License

Master Electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to plan, lay out, and supervise the installation and repair of electrical wiring apparatus, and equipment for electric light, heat, and power in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work.

Journeyman Electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work.

Class B Electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work, and shall have eighteen months’ experience in farmstead or residential wiring, and shall have passed an examination before the state electrical board based upon the national electrical code as it applies to farmstead or residential wiring.

Requirements to Obtaining Your License

All contracting Master or Class B electricians are required to be covered by general liability insurance in the amount of $100,000.00 for Masters and $50,000.00 for Class B and shall contain endorsement for comprehensive, products/completed operations, and premises/operations.

If the cost of the project exceeds $2,000, a contractors’ license will also be required.

Master Electrician

  • Must have one year’s experience working as a licensed journeyman electrician under the supervision of a contracting master electrician.

Journeyman Electrician

  • Shall have four years experience (8000 hours total, maximum 2000 hours per year) registered as an apprentice electrician (of which up to eighteen months may apply under the qualifications of a class B electrician) under the supervision of a contracting master licensed electrician in an area where electrical construction work is done in the jurisdiction regulating similar rules of the state of North Dakota.
  • One year’s credit will be granted for a graduate of a two-year electrical school approved by the state electrical board.
  • The person must have the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations of the National Electrical Code.

Class B Electrician

  • Shall have eighteen months’ experience in farmstead or residential wiring under the supervision of a master or class B electrician.
  • Commercial wiring experience will not be credited for experience towards a class B license.
  • Six months’ credit will be granted for a graduate of a two-year electrical school approved by the state electrical board.

Applying For Your License

Applications can be obtained by calling the North Dakota State Electrical Board at Division at 1-701-328-9522.

  • The master license fee is $50, the Journeyman fee is $25, and the Class B fee is $40.

  • The exam fee is included with the application fee.
  • After you apply, you will be set up for your exam.

Books and References for the Exam

The following references are used on the both the Electrical Contractor and Electrical Journeyman examinations. These references may be purchased from our online contractor’s bookstore. They will be provided to you at the test site.

Continuing Education

6 hours of continuing education are required every year and 3 of the hours must be based on the National Electrical Code.

Reciprocity Agreement

  • The electrical contractor/master license is reciprocal with Minnesota and South Dakota.
  • The journeyman license is reciprocal with Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
