Kentucky HVAC Mechanic
| Requirements: |
- Applicants are required to pass the Business and Law exam to obtain this license.
- Candidates must be at least 18 years old and document 2 years of experience. Credit is given only for experience occurring after January 1, 1990 and it must be experience under the supervision of a licensed contractor. Trade education may be substituted for a maximum of one year of experience.
- The state requires that all HVAC Contractors have general liability insurance of at least $500,000.

Limited Journeyman HVAC Duct Mechanic: Individuals with experience and career goals in a limited capacity to install duct work who may work independently as journeymen within the range of the limited license and under the supervision of a master HVAC contractor. The application must be certified to show not less than 18 years of age, regularly and principally employed or engaged in the HVAC trade for not less than two years and 3,000 work hours under the direction and supervision of a master HVAC contractor.
Limited Journeyman HVAC Installer Mechanic: Individuals with experience and career goals in a limited capacity to install HVAC systems, who may work independently as journeymen within the range of the limited license and under the supervision of a master HVAC contractor. The application must be certified to show not less than 18 years of age, regularly and principally employed or engaged in the HVAC trade for not less than two years and 3,000 work hours under the direction and supervision of a master HVAC contractor.
Journeyman HVAC Mechanic: Those individuals knowledgeable and skilled to install, maintain, remodel and repair HVAC systems meeting the requirements of the Kentucky HVAC Codes and Standards. A journeyman mechanic may work independently within the range of the license under the supervision of a master HVAC contractor. The application must be certified to show not less than 18 years of age, regularly and principally employed or engaged in the HVAC trade for not less than two years and 3,000 work hours under the direction and supervision of a master HVAC contractor.
Master HVAC Contractor: Those individuals who desire to contract for and engage in the business of HVAC contracting and are familiar with the requirement of the Kentucky HVAC law, codes and regulations. The application must be certified to show not less than 18 years of age, regularly and principally employed or engaged in the HVAC trade for not less than two years under the direction and supervision of a master HVAC contractor.

At the present time the commonwealth of Kentucky does not have a reciprocal agreement with any state or municipality relating to HVAC licensing.

| Continuing Education: |
License holders must take 6 hours of Continuing Education in order to renew their license. |

- The testing company is ICC (1-800-211-2754)
- Three hours and contains 50 questions (limited journeyman)
- Three hours and contains 60 questions (journeyman)
- Four-hour time limit with 100 questions (master)
- 70% is required to pass the exam
- Topics on the exam include Business Organizations, Licensing, Estimating and Bidding, Contract Management, Project Management, Insurance and, Bonding, OSHA Recordkeeping, Personnel Regulations, Financial Management, Tax Laws, Lien Laws.
