License Requirements

Requirements to Obtaining your License.

  • Applicants are required to pass the Business and Law exam to obtain this license.
  • Anyone who will perform nonexempt electrical work without supervision by a licensed electrician or master electrician DOES require a license.
  • In order to contract with the public to perform electrical work an electrical contractor license is required. Only licensed electrical contractors may pull electrical permits.
  • The Master Electrician license is needed to supervise direct or take responsible charge of any Electrician who is engaged in the construction, alteration, or repair of any electrical wiring used for the purpose of furnishing heat, light or power. The Master may also conduct electrical work himself.
  • 6 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade AND a training course in electrical work OR an additional 2 years of verifiable experience

Work that can be Done Under this License

An Electrical Contractor license is needed to contract with the public to do electrical work. Also, only licensed Electrical Contractors may pull electrical permits. Every Electrical Contractor must employee at least one Master Electrician if they do not hold that license themselves.

Examination

Exam Details

  • The testing company is ICC (1-800-211-2754)
  • 30 questions and an 1.5-hour time limit
  • 70% is required to pass the exam
  • The exam fee is $60.
  • Topics on the exam include Business Organizations, Licensing, Estimating and Bidding, Contract Management, Project Management, Insurance and, Bonding, OSHA Recordkeeping, Personnel Regulations, Financial Management, Tax Laws, Lien Laws.
