Requirements to Obtaining your License.
- Four years of experience is required.
- Please note that the Arizona Business Management exam is also required to be passed to obtain your contractor’s license.
- Workers compensation insurance is required if you employ at least 1 person.
- If you are doing residential work, you must participate in the Recovery Fund or post a consumer protection bond in the amount of $200,000.
- All contractors are required to be bonded. Please for specific bond requirements.

Work that can be Done Under this License
- GENERAL SMALL COMMERCIAL CONTRACTOR (B-2)
Small commercial construction in connection with any new structure or addition built, being built, or to be built for the support, shelter and enclosure of persons, animals, chattels or movable property of any kind. This scope includes the supervision of all or any part of the above and includes the management or direct or indirect supervision of any work performed.
This scope includes most of the L scopes except as they relate to electrical, plumbing, air conditioning systems, boilers, swimming pools, spas, and roofing (except shingles and shakes) which must be subcontracted to an appropriately licensed contractor.
- GENERAL RESIDENTIAL CONTRACTOR (B)
Construction of all or any part of a residential structure or appurtenance, except for electrical, plumbing, air conditioning systems, boilers, swimming pools, spas, and roofing (except shingles and shakes) which must be subcontracted to an appropriately licensed contractor. Also included are the scopes of work in B-3 and most of the C scopes except as restricted above.
- DUAL RESIDENTIAL AND SMALL COMMERCIAL (KB-2)
This classification allows the scope of work permitted by the B-2 General Small Commercial and the B- General Residential Contractor licenses.

Applying to get your License
To apply, contact the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at 1-602-542-1525. Licenses are good for 2 years. Licenses are generally granted within 40-60 days.
- Commercial Contractor application fee is $890
- Residential Contractor application fee is $445
- Dual License Contractor application fee is $1,105

Reciprocity Agreements
Limited reciprocal agreements exist with California, Nevada, and Utah.

Continuing Education
As of this time, there is no continuing education for this license.

Exam Details
- The fee for the exam is $56 when taking 1 portion or $106 when taking 2 portions (business management and the trade).
- The exam has 100 questions and a time limit of 4 hours.
- A 70% is required to pass.
- Topics on the exam include sitework, concrete and concrete reinforcement; masonry; carpentry; metal framing; roofing; thermal and moisture protection; doors and windows finishes; plan reading and estimating.
