Alabama Plumbing License (Master/Journeyman Plumber)

Requirements:
  • Pre-approval is not required to sit for this examination and there are no requirements for continuing education.
  • Applicants must have been registered as an Apprentice with the Board for at least two years or have completed a Board-approved Apprentice program.
  • Masters are required to obtain a $2,000.00 surety bond at the local level in the county where work is being done.
  • Journeyman is not required by the State to carry a bond or insurance.
Services:

Journeyman Plumber: any person who engages in or works at the actual installation, repair, or replacement of plumbing systems and works under the supervision of a Master.

Master Plumber: any individual who engages or proposes to engage in the business of contracting to do, or to superintending the installation, maintenance, or repair of plumbing, or both.

Applications: Applicants are required to submit a credit report and document experience on the application The license fee is $205.00. The processing time is approx. 60 days. Applications must be submitted 30 days before the next scheduled board meeting. The board meets once per month.
Reciprocity: Alabama has no reciprocity agreements for this license. Applicants with an active license in another state may use that license to qualify to take this exam; otherwise all applicants must start at the Apprentice level.
Continuing Education: As of this time, there is no continuing education for this license.
Exam:
  • The exam is open-book, with 70 questions and a 3-hour time limit. (Journeyman)
  • The exam is open-book, with 100 questions and a 4-hour time limit. (Master)
  • Exams happen approximately once every quarter.
  • The exam fee for Journeyman is $100.
  • The exam fee for Master is $150.
  • Topics include general trade knowledge and the information contained in the 2003 Edition of the International Plumbing Code.(Journeyman)
